Servicemembers Group Life Insurance Coverage

Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) is a VA program that provides low cost group life insurance to members of the Uniformed Services.  This includes commissioned officers of the Public Health Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, cadets and midshipmen of the service academies.

Unless members elect to reduce or cancel their benefit amount, they are automatically insured under SGLI for the maximum amount of $400,000.  Reductions can be made in $50,000 increments or coverage may be canceled entirely.

SGLI coverage includes Traumatic Injury Protection, which provides servicemembers protection against loss due to traumatic injuries.  It is designed to provide financial assistance to members so their loved ones can be with them while they recover.  Depending upon the nature of the injury, coverage ranges from $25,000 to $100,000.

For part-time SGLI coverage, premiums are $26.00 per month for $400,000 of coverage or $3.50 per $50,000 for smaller amounts. An additional $1.00 per month is added to the basic premium for a traumatic injury protection rider.

IRR members are charged a premium of $1.25 for $400,000 insurance for 1-day call-ups, but note that rates are subject to change based on the experience of the program.

SGLI coverage may be converted to VGLI when you are released from active duty, active duty for training, initial active duty for training when you separate from the Ready Reserve.  If preferred, it can be converted  to a commercial life insurance policy effective at the end of the 120-day SGLI extension period.
