House Passes 2013 COLA for Veterans

The House has passed H.R. 4114, the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2012. If it is signed into law by also passing the Senate vote, H.R. 4114 will increase the annual cost-of-living rate for veterans beginning on December 1, 2012. This year’s estimated COLA increase will be approximately 1.9 percent.

For many, passage of the COLA each year is merely a formality. But it has typically been pushed to the end of the year, and after there were a few last-minute votes in 2011 for military pay, it is a relief to many to have it passing through Congress at such an early date. According to the press release issued by the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, taking care of the COLA now ensures that veterans will be given the benefits they have been promised without falling victim to political fighting.

Lee C. Sheldon,

You should really go online and go to, and Both are really good websites which are secure and idiot proof. Good luck to you.

(For Lee):

As a now 60-year old Vietnam Army vet in receipt of 60% SC disability comp since 1996, I would also add to the other suggestions that have been offered here that you speak with one of the service officers from one of the several veterans service organizations, such as Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Amvets, or the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

I’ve found them to be an excellent source for obtaining assistance in getting the benefits you are rightly entitled to. Having also worked in the VA Healthcare System in Medical Administration in my younger days…I know only too well just how very slow things move in the system.

Disability claim filings alone…have increased by 50% now. The VA is moving as expeditiously as possible to “fully electronisize”, so-to-speak, the benefits & application processes. As Michael mentioned…get signed up with MyHealthevet and For full access to the MyHealthevet site (i.e. to be able to utilize all its functions) will involve an in-person verification/authentication procedure…which you can usually do at any VA Medical Center or Regional Office.

Best wishes!

what benefits are available to 40% disabled marine/army vet, thank you

i’am sorry! But, i think it is Obama’s fault that the vets have had and are having problems with getting whats owned to them. my husband being a vet, and passed away in 03′ from service connected. he played hell trying to get what was owned to him. as far as, getting whats owed and the colas, who ever is in office, OBAMA, it’s on his watch, so it’s his job. you all need to read whats in the Obama health plan, he also wants to cut benefits and also, put and combine va benefits in with welfare benefits. So, how do you not blame OBAMA?

People please take a Political Science course before you start hammering at the Commander-In-Chief. You will then know that the blame doesn’t truly fall on him. You might want too start knocking at your local politician’s door for answers. Nowadays with age, wisdom falls short.

Please, get your facts straight! President Obama has done more for Vets in 4 years than Bush ever thought of doing in 8! And what about the two Illegal wars Bush started!?!? Not to mention the first Lady and Mrs. biden helping and setting up programs for our returning Vets!!!
Cost of Living Adjustment has NOTHING to do with POTUS!
You complaigners would have really been shaken up if Romney (the 4 time draft dodger) would have been voted in.
Thank God the majority of Americans have common sense!

I thank God each day for the rational and common sensed people that at least say what is true and real and not just out of evil road rage mentality .It is so sensless to GO OFF for somthing that has no more importance than the power these people crave.God gave us a brain and the free will to think and do pretty much as we please but the better world requires the better person.Evil breeds evil in all size shapes and forms only breeds more of the same Please be civil and when in doubt think….

When GW was CINC, many veterans were angered with his unwillingness to help veterans. When Obama came into office, other veterans were equally angry. Fact is, we have come a long way from the late 60s and 70s. As a child, I remember the VA hospital where I went to see my uncle (Korean Conflict Era), From where I see the VA facilities now, its come a long way, regardless of who was the CINC. Let’s be thankful for what we have. I’ve been to Former Soviet countries where their Afghanistan veterans get $100-150.00 USD per month. Since there is no USSR. There are no system in Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, ect to fall back on as we have here. Secondly, my hats off to the Vietnam Era veteran that returned to an ungrateful nation. I was helped by a Vietnam Era vet and DAV officer and now it’s my turn to help veterans returning from OIF-OEF. That’s what we do, we take care of our brother and sister that fought for this country, regardless of your politics, color, religion. In combat, that crap doesn’t matters. God bless America and God bless everyone

We are lucky to even be getting a COLA this year, the economy really does not justify one. And President Obama has nothing to do with giving out COLA’s so stop blaming him for being responsible for getting them or not. I am a retired military also and I am not looking for handouts, seems like many of you think the country should just take care of you. I also get disability and am just thankful for what they do give us.

I gave up fighting the V.A. Came back from OIF in Dec 2003.Had to fight to get 10 percent. After putting up with the pain for 5 years I went to my own Dr. who had me get an MRI we sent a copy to the VA and made appointments to get a higher rating. Finally reached 40% but according to the civilian Drs. I could get more from SSI. My injury has changed my life from an active life to one that by the end of the day I am struggling to walk. It has affected my home life as well. The VA and the Gov. does not care for it’s veterans. I had to retire after 23 years because I was embarrassed that I could no longer keep up with my training.

Posted on Sunday 25th November, 2012, 12:01pm

Liz… Obama was not in office in 2003. Bush and the NeoCons tried to cut the VA in 2003 but the Democrats saved the day. What is with some folks not wanting others to have health insurance. Everyone of us pay for those who don’t pay or don’t have the ability to pay. Wake Up Americans. We pay one way or the other….

Posted on Tuesday 27th November, 2012, 8:07pm

I am happy we as vets are getting anything this year. For many years we have fought and fought to get any benefits. Whats worse is when it takes 2.5 years such as myself to get a new rating increase for health issues due to the lack of people in the departments needed to make these decisions. Put some vets to work and increase the number of employees that can assist in the rating areas and give those of us whom need the help what we fought for.

I’m a 65 year old 100% disabled Vietnam Veteran. I can’t believe how ignorant some people still are when it comes to politics, the VA, cola and other current events. I have spent over 25 years in the VA system. When GW was in office he placed a hiring freeze, appointed a Vietnam Vet to head the VA, Nicholson, who wanted to “review” all the PTSD awards. The Vietnam Veterans of America said ok, then you will have to “review” all of the cases that were denied too. Well guess what happened? That’s right no “reviews”. The cola is not a presidential power, it is a law made by Congress.

Is the 2013 VA Disability Compensation Rate chart out there?

Posted on Tuesday 4th December, 2012, 12:22pm

Liz, You complain about Obama, but you are a 47%er that Romney had the out right distain for. Really, what entitlement do you think the republicans are really talking about cutting. Bush didn’t even antisapte the increase in VA claims or he did not care or like during 911 actual he sat dumbfounded like he did in the class room when plane were flying into buildings and americans were dying. I think you have underlying bigotry that only shallow reasoning and logic at work. Why would so many speak so negatively of Obama who support programs that benefit you. What are you really about and really afrieed of that makes any sense?

Posted on Monday 10th December, 2012, 1:03pm

Ok,in 2004 Bush Became President, he was blamed for bad times at the pump a Unjust War and a bad economy. 2008 Bush once again is President and again blamed for bad times at the pump a unjust War and a bad economy. 2009 Obama is President, Bush is blamed for the bad times at the pump,a unjust War and a bad economy. 2012 Obama is President, Bush is blamed for bad times at the pump a unjust War and a bad economy. Well as I see it from the Main street Media, BUSH is really the President and Obama just keeps the seat warm in the Oval office. Our military compensation is designed to get smaller each year and COLAS don’t keep up when they take out more taxes in the middle of a tax year!, that pretty much cancels COLA increases.

Posted on Tuesday 11th December, 2012, 11:09am

Patricia – How in the hell has Odumbo done more for vets than Bush? He has done nothing but threaten to take everything away! HE is simply the worst president this country has ever voted into office and will be the ruin of this country! I would highly suggest that you get your head our of his rear end and see the light!

Posted on Tuesday 11th December, 2012, 6:50pm

Vets have gotten nothing under Obama…our cost of living has gone up by at least 10%. We have had two pay raises in 2 years that add up to less then 4%. Obama is not a disabled vet…he has no clue what living in pain is like everyday of your life because of service to our great nation. Veterans deserve a lot more then these Washinton DC Zarrs that have no clue that make six figure incomes.

Posted on Saturday 15th December, 2012, 9:17pm

well my husband retired with what was deemed a “too hard to do file” that is documented BTW, we had 4 VA reps, then the last one just cancelled his entire account stated he had “missed appointments” which I was able to find out last second were cancelled by Salt Lake City, never arranged for, one is a jaw bone issue done by the military docs they last wrote it was “not service connected” let me see if I got this right….they military tells you who you can see, no other choices, they then tell you what WILL be done in your best interest, again no arguements expected or tolerated, then when it fails they send you packing and say sorry we cant fix that, you are retiring so not enough time left (it was a 18 month minimum precedure we went thru twice) It has NEVER been even evaluated since retirement and they say now we have to start all over as they closed his case! REALLY ALL YOU BLEEDING HEART ITS NOT HIS FAULT WEENIES CAN KISS OUR REGISTERED TO VOTE BUTTS!
I do not know what military you were in, but my husband served proudly for 33 years, he DOES have a lot of medical issues but most of them stem from carelessly done work by surgeons who were buying time to leave. Honestly YES that is congressional, representational, and POTUS….ALL of them from Carter to Obama…..because that is his span.
When you get little to no choice in your healthcare then the people who create that manifest are thusly responsible.
P.S. My degree supports the piss poor medical, I have never seen such careless medical as I saw in what some call the best Military hospitals there are…..Huh….Scary is true.

I would first like to say thank you to every one on here veteran or family member of, thanks for serving our county. I’ve seen alot of postings of veterans and family members expressing how upset they are with how the president and the powers that be are not doing enough or fast enough, and that some of those powers that be don’t care about veterans or the supporting family member. I’m just going to say this, I am a total disabled veteran, and I’ve been treated by the army for my condition before I was discharged for my disability, I’ve received care from VA facilities down south and up north. And it is my experience that the VA does it’s best to treat and help the legitimate disabled veterans, like every government program you always have those that try and game the system, with that said instead of everyone wanting to blame the president and the powers that be, take a look at all the veterans trying and succeeding in overwhelming the VA disability system with false claims, another thing to remember is that when you file a claim or receive treatment at a VA hospital that is close to a big population like a city or 40 minutes from a military base, then common sense would tell you that the waiting period for a response is in fact going to be longer.

Again it seems that most people veterans or civilians have no clue and as a vet, who served honorably, the society in which we returned to remained without gratitude or moral fiber. We were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice but as well as being injured in line of duty multiple times, which my hearts can except the smack to oath we all have taken to defend the Constitution seems to be non existent upon discharge, or within the fabric of active duty. THE COLA IS LIKEN TO A HAND OF HELP CLEAN OR DIRTY, BLACK, CAUCASION, ASAIAN, LATINO , as long as you do not loose site of the principle of the intent. Thank you.
Qeustion: My last tour of duty in the later 2000 resulted on almost fatal levels of abuse of power rank and breeches of oaths forced vacination, racially motivated based on a unacceptance of Indigenous native heritage, native people’s have served with less recognition as a people than any others. I have been recovering for three years and Va will not even hear any claim neither did IG, can anyone help.

Posted on Thursday 27th December, 2012, 10:54am

The VA and Indian Health Services just announced a partnership to help Native Americans receive better care.

Here is a blog post about it:

You might try going to an IHS facility to ask if they can submit the claims for you, so that you can completely avoid dealing with the VA directly.

Good luck. I hope this new arrangement is set up precisely to help you.

Ok. As some feel that grammar is paramount in discussion, i willl attempt to be grammatically sound in my response. I am a Army veteran with a 90% disability rating. I am an African-American and, as shocking as many will make it seem, i did not vote for President Obama in either election. I do however support whoever is the commander-in-Cheif as i took an oath to serve my country and obey the orders of the leaders elected. I did not agree with alot of President Bush’s decisions but i did not hesitate to deploy on 4 seperate occasion with a high tempo combat unit. It was my Presidents call and i was not going to second guess it (FYI- I didnt vote for Bush either). I listen to alot of people on message boards that blame President Bush or President Obama about so many things but they dont realize that its not one man that controls the country. We elect people that “represent” the people but it seems like they are more self-serving then self-sacrificing. A soldier knows what self sacrifice truly means. Disabled veteran’s are given nowhere near the benefits awarded to politician. With that being said (i apologize for ranting) I am honored to serve and i do not regrete what i experienced , both good and bad, during my military service. I appreciate what i recieve for compensation even though i feel more should be done. I question no ones patriotism nor do i pass judgement on anyones time in service or extent of disability. I guess basically i mean to say: Lets stop blaming a person and start analyzing the people of this country and there ability to be persuaded with political party loyalty. I stand loyal to my country as a whole and i put no faith in a party that is willing to neglect part of the population for the values of “thier constituents”.
Please keep your angry insults to a minimum as i really could care less that you want to punch me in the face for speaking my opinion.

Patricia: Mr. Bush’s Afghan war was necessary in order to ferret out the Taliban and find the perpetrators of 9/11. Obama continued this war and even increased it.
I did not know Romney was a “draft dodger.” Could you please site your facts for this accusation? Also, I must have missed something about Obama . . . what branch of service did he serve in?

Posted on Thursday 3rd January, 2013, 4:10pm

Obama cares a great deal about vets.Carter ,Clinton are still around and helping. Where are the Bushes. All the civilian help in Iraq and Afganistan (sorry I was in Nam) K.P.,Guard duty, fuel trucks were never done by civilians.Air conditioning.I love my brothers that fought in the desert. But Dick Cheney and the good ol boys robbed us blind. The RepubliCONS want to cut are disability.Right now they are hell bent on protecting billionaires. WTF wake-up…

Liz, is full of it and on GOP Kool-Aid, her qoute,
i’am sorry! UPDATE: On Tuesday, Nov. 27 President Obama signed into law a bill that gives veterans and survivors a 1.7 percent hike for the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). Effective Dec. 1, the increase will appear on January paychecks—directly deposited on Dec. 31, 2012—and affect about 4 million veterans, military retirees and survivors!
I’m a 100% SC Vet, Obama & his Administration is doing a great job!
Liz, stay of the KoolAid!
